Compensation of Witnesses

 

The statute 28 U. S. C. 1821 establishes a $40.00 per day attendance fee for witnesses in courts of the United States and further entitles such witnesses to reimbursement of travel and subsistance expenses for the states listed on the per diem rates chart in the same amounts payable to federal government employees for official travel.

Effective for travel on or after January 1, 2013, judiciary travelers may claim mileage expenses as follows:

$ .565 cents per mile for use of a privately-owned automobile;
$ .535 cents per mile for use of a privately-owned motorcycle;
$1.33 per mile for use of a privately-owned airplane.
